Parcels, success and try to remember

- This is the only time I order new books, when friend Karin Slaughter's latest book is out. It is such fun to receive a parcel in the mail though and I had almost forgotten about the pre-order.

- Karin used to manage a small sign shop around the corner from my office and I was always interested in what she was reading, so we would do business and then have book chat. I remember the day she told me that she was moving on because she had gotten a three book deal with William Morrow publishing house. Her first book signing in 2001 at Barnes & Noble was attended by me, her father, a couple of other relatives and three sign shop employees. It's been exciting to see her success. The one tomorrow evening will be me and a hundred or more people in an auditorium.

- Another book I had almost forgotten about came on the same day. I won a book just for commenting on Jewel's "Pink Ink" blog, Iris Gomez's book "Try to Remember." Jewel is a journalist who also writes fiction. Thanks Jewel - my summer reading is set!

Oh I wish I could get excited about reading books!

Be careful that book is very near your gas hob, I'd hate for you to set the book on fire!

Oh, books! Just the anticipation of cracking the hardcover of a really good books is wonderful!

You'll be having some lovely reads on your deck, Lynn, is Mother Nature would turn down the thermostat just a wee bit :)

I see you cook with gas. A gas hob, as Joey calls it. I love the little differences in terms between here and the UK.

And of course I love you. And Jewel too.

That story of your friend's writing success makes me smile and motivates me to work more on my own novel. I just love it when any artist succeeds and can do what she loves as her day job.

Summertime seems to be a great time for reading. At least, usually this is so. I haven't done as much this summer, in spite of spending lots of time at the library. I've been using their air conditioned cubicles to write! :D

That is awesome about your friend! I am a book fiend. Never as much time as I would like to read, except on vacation and long plane flights. Speaking of things in the mail, has my card shown up?

Fireblossom -

Me either. I haunt the library and reserve books. And I love picking up second hand books, too.

Joe -

It was just there for a moment or two. I haven't heard of that expression - gas hob. We call it a burner - same thing, I guess. :)

Talon -

I liked the way that one looked when I opened the box. The golden broken rays shining up. So much fun getting a package. It is supposed to be a bit cooler for the weekend.

Jannie -

I do like cooking with gas. And back atcha on the love thing, girlie. xo

Ellis -

Reading and blogging - two favorite things. No way would I go away!

Mama Zen -

I agree - totally.

Meredith -

Karin admits she is lucky in that one of her friends had a connection in publishing that lead to her getting the book deal. The one piece of advice she got worked for her - she was writing these historical novels and getting turned down left and right. Write what you know, they said. And so her suspense novels are based in Georgia, with Southern characters. They are like real people. I am so proud of her and she has stayed real. She dresses exactly the same - kind of disheveled most of the time. Same house in Grant Park. But she did buy a cool car. :)

Lance -

It was so nice of her to do that. I love Jewel's blog.

Riot Kitty -

You know - I did not check the mailbox the last couple of days - I'll bet your card is in there. If I wasn't already in my bathrobe, I'd run down there and get it. I'll check in the morning. You are so sweet to send me a card. xo

Thank you. Loved reading your poem this morning.

Must be great to know a successful novelist from the hometown- I Like the cover art-
I just started one I'd bought last year at the library used sale- $2 fiction "Ghost walk" by Rebecca Stott. I've never been to a book signing. N a Jewel Book too? Lucky you-
I used to order Steven King...
no time to read lately- may take a year to read this one!

Snaggle -

Same here - it seems to take forever for me to finish a book. I commute 20+ miles to work and have taken to listening to books on CD from the library.

Aren't those used book sales great? I've gotten some really great ones that way.
